THE new girl on the block at house builder Rippon Homes is keen to make a successful return to the industry after taking a year out.
Experienced sales advisor, Norma Houlbrook, had worked in the housing industry for 12 years, but following the downturn in the market decided on a career change and went to work as a sales representative for Ferrero Rocher.
After less than a year in her new role, Norma made the decision to return to the job that she loves and applied for the sales advisor role at Rippon.
Norma, who lives in Worksop, said: “I really missed the business when I worked for Ferrero Rocher.
“I love the role of the sales advisor and though I knew the market was still going to be a challenge, I decided to make a return to the industry.”
After successfully applying for the role at Rippon, Norma was appointed sales advisor and splits her time between two of the house builder’s Mansfield developments – Woodhouse Gardens in Leeming Lane North and Heathside Gardens, in Jubilee Way.
She said: “Rippon is a quality local builder and is well known and respected in the Notts area so this is why I chose to apply for a position.
“I’ve worked for bigger housebuilders in the past but was attracted to Rippon because it’s a small, family run company and I truly believe in their product.

Insurance agencies and companies on this year’s San Diego Business Journal Lists of Insurance Companies and Property/Casualty Insurance Agencies report the dramatic rise in insurance premiums is due to significant changes within the industry affecting both agencies and carriers, specifically workers’ compensation, mold remediation laws, and voluntary benefit programs.
This year’s Lists of Insurance Companies and Property/Casualty Agencies are ranked by local full-time employees as of Jan. 1, 2003.
Dick Marrs, CEO of Marrs Maddocks & Insurance Services, No. 16 on this year’s Property/Casualty List, sees workers’ compensation as the leading factor affecting the industry.
According to Marrs, the deregulation of workers’ compensation rates in 1995 was the catalyst for the runaway train of premium inflation.
Before 1995, insurance agencies operated under a fixed-rate system in which by law every carrier was required to charge the same price for workers’ compensation coverage. When Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi replaced that system in 1995 with an open market system, rates were cut in half because carriers were put in direct competition with each other.
“They were writing insurance for less than their cost and a lot of the carriers went out of business, a lot of carriers left the state,” Marrs said. “It left the state’s compensation fund (underwriting) half the employers in all of California. And because the experience was poor, the prices are up dramatically now.”

Of the 18 agencies on this year’s Property/Casualty List, 13 attribute at least 25 percent of their agency’s business to workers’ compensation. Marrs Maddocks reports that 40 percent of their revenues are generated by workers’ compensation, but Marrs adds, “that may be a little bit understated.”
Marrs Maddocks reported property/casualty revenues for 2002 at $3 million, about 10 percent of their overall premium volume for the same year.
“We’re benefiting from this hard market because prices are up,” Marrs said. “And I hate to say it, but it’s at the detriment of most clients and most employers because they’re paying a lot more.”
Another factor causing increasing statewide premiums is the Mold Disclosure Act of 2001, SB 732, which requires landlords and sellers of residential and commercial property to disclose the existence of mold to potential tenants and buyers.
